The Tasmanian government is in the process of reviewing the option of deregulating the Tasmanian energy market.

As with other states where deregulation has already occurred, this will bring a range of electricity companies into the marketplace, and give consumers a choice as to who sells them gas and electricity for their homes and businesses.

Until then, however, Tasmania’s energy supplies are handled solely by Aurora Energy.

Aurora Energy is an electricity and gas retailer and distributor that services residential and business customers in Tasmania.

While energy retail to big businesses in Tasmania is open to competition, the household and small business sector remains fully regulated by the State government, restricting this market to Aurora Energy only.

In 2009, Aurora Energy was chosen to construct the Tasmanian arm of the National Broadband Network, which is the largest infrastructure investment in Australia’s history.
