- ActewAGL
The electricity provider ActewAGL was established in 2000, with the merge of Australian Gas Light Co (AGL) and a government-owned enterprise named Actew Corporation.
ActewAGL is made up of two partnerships: ActewAGL Distribution and ActewAGL Retail. The distribution arm is responsible for planning, constructing and maintaining gas and electricity networks in the ACT. ActewAGL retail supplies energy services to customers.
A preferred retailer in the ACT, ActewAGL is Australia’s first multi-utility service provider, supplying electricity, gas, water and waste water services, as well as full telecommunications services in the ACT and parts of NSW through TransACT.
ActewAGL offers a green energy program called Greenchoice, which supports renewable energy generation from sources such as wind power, mini-hydro and biomass.
- EnergyAustralia
EnergyAustralia is one of Australia’s largest energy providers, with origins that extend over 100 years. The name ‘EnergyAustralia’ was adopted after a merger in 1996 between Orion Energy and Sydney Electricity.
Owned by the NSW government, EnergyAustralia also supplies electricity throughout the rest of Australia, including the ACT. An electricity distributor and retailer, EnergyAustralia operates an electricity network of around 22,275 square kilometers and supplies electricity to approximately 1.5 million Australian customers.
EnergyAustralia supports the GreenPower Accredited energy renewable program by offering customers a variety of green energy plans.
- TRUenergy
TRUenergy entered the Australian energy market in 1995 as an electricity and gas retailer and distributor. Formerly known as TXU, Yallourn Energy and Auspower, TRUenergy is currently owned by CLP Power Asia, a subsidiary of CLP Group.
CLP Group is based in Hong Kong and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
TRUenergy is active in numerous projects for the long term reduction of greenhouse emissions, including the construction of a gas-fired power station at Tallawarra in NSW, which is expected to emit 70% less greenhouse gas emissions than traditional coal-fired plants.
TRUenergy have also committed to reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2050 as part of their Climate Change Strategy.
